Discovery Demonstrations in Your Classroom
Super Cool (grades K-5)
Students witness the surprising changes in every day materials when they
are super-cooled to the temperature of liquid nitrogen (-320°F). Quick
transformations from gases to liquids to solids and back again dramatically
demonstrate the properties of these fundamental states of matter.
Classroom Safety Requirements: A table with a clear area 8 feet
in front of it.
Now You See It (grades 4-8)
After observing the effects of visible and invisible light, students use
cutting-edge near infrared technology to uncover a ring of art forgers.
Classroom Requirements: Room set up for LCD projector (FSC will
bring) and a table for demonstration items.
Revealing the Invisible
(grades 4-8)
Students experiment with a thermal infrared camera in order to develop
a better understanding of visible and invisible light.
Classroom Requirements: Room set up for LCD projector (FSC will
bring) and a table for demonstration items.
StarLab: The Portable Planetarium (all
ages)
Students experience an immersive exploration of the night sky including
seasons of Earth and constellations, general observing techniques, navigating
the night sky (based on current season), and multicultural constellation
stories.
Classroom Requirements: The StarLab needs to be set up on a clean
floor in a room that is at least 30 feet wide, 30 feet long and 16 feet
high, with nearby access to an electric outlet. If the StarLab is to be
set up in a gym, cafeteria or multipurpose room, no other activities can
be occurring in the same room Ð sounds carry in and out of the StarLab.
Prices: $50 per class, 30 students maximum per class. Extra charges
apply outside of Pima county. Depending on consultation with the teacher,
demonstrations will last between 30 and 45 minutes.
