Science Cafe – Vision and The Gift of Sight – Latest Advances in Improving Your Vision
Dr. Roxana Ursea, Assistant Professor, Department of Ophthalmology; Director, Cornea and Refractive Surgery Division at the University of Arizona will present a short talk entitled, “Vision and the Gift of Sight – Latest Advances in Improving Your Vision” on December 9th, 2008 at 6:00pm.
Come and learn about how your vision works and how to keep your eyes healthy. Did you know that living in Arizona might increase your risk of suffering from dry eye syndrome – a stinging or burning of the eye or pain and redness of the eye? Maybe the quality of your vision has deteriorated and contact lenses or glasses no longer work as well as before – symptoms commonly associated with keratoconus. Or perhaps colors seem faded and your vision has become cloudy or blurry – the most common symptoms of developing cataracts. Then you don’t want to miss Dr. Roxana Ursea as she discusses these and other eye health issues at the next science café.
After graduating from Medical School Summa Cum Laude in Bucharest, Romania, Dr. Roxana Ursea completed a residency in Internal Medicine. In 1990, she pursued further postgraduate training in United States with fellowships in vascular biology and high-frequency ultrasound ophthalmology at Cornell University Medical College. She completed her residency in ophthalmology at Cornell New York Presbyterian Hospital and University of Maryland in Baltimore. Dr.Ursea expanded her clinical expertise with specialized training in uveitis and ocular immunology at the National Eye Institute of NIH in Bethesda. Her main projects involved use of immunosuppressives and immunomodulators in the management of refractory and special cases of ocular inflammation, and she participated and designed protocols for clinical trials. She completed a second fellowship in cornea, external diseases and refractive surgery at University of California in San Diego.
Dr. Ursea is the chairman of the American Society of Ophthalmic Ultrasound and immediate past chairman of the Ophthalmic Ultrasound section of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine. She is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and the Association of Research in Vision and Ophthalmology. Dr. Ursea’s research interests include exploring new applications of high frequency ultrasound and custom wavefront technology in refractive surgery, and new therapeutic modalities for anterior segment disorders.
